Parliament endorses bill to penalize the use of plastic bags and tableware

In the second reading, the Parliament has approved a draft law to sanction anyone selling or using plastic bags and tableware. According to the project, the fines will be up to 4,500 lei for individuals and up to 12,000 lei for legal entities.

These provisions refer to the use and sale of transport bags made of plastic, with or without handle, with a wall thickness equal to or greater than 50 microns, provided to consumers at the points of sale of goods; thin plastic bags with a wall thickness of less than 50 microns, except those used as packaging; and very thin plastic bags, with a wall thickness of less than 15 microns, except those used as packaging.

The sanctions will also be applied for the use and marketing of dishes, glasses, other accessories of the table services, as well as the disposable sticks made of plastic, except the biodegradable ones.

Parliament has approved, previously, amendments and additions to the legislation that banned the use and marketing of plastic bags starting on January 1, 2019, and, starting with January 1, 2021, - the total ban.

At the same time, starting January 1, 2021, the use and marketing of plates, glasses, other accessories of table services and disposable sticks, with the exception of biodegradable ones, will be prohibited.
