Moldova’s Constitutional Court: Russian military presence in Transnistrian area runs counter Constitution

The presence of the Russian military in Moldova’s Transnistrian area is an infringement of the Moldovan Constitution. It’s the ruling of the Constitutional Court, which declared those troops as occupying, for the first time.

The assessment was given following Liberal MPs’ notification as to Moldova’s neutrality.

"The Russian federation has not withdrawn its occupying troops from the country’s east, and, on the contrary, it has strengthened its military presence in the Transnistrian area of the Republic of Moldova, and this is an infringement of the constitutional provisions regarding the independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity and permanent neutrality of the Republic of Moldova, and of the international law," said court chair Alexandru Tănase.

The Court lit green light to this country’s partnership with NATO, specifying the neutrality may not hinder Moldova to cooperate with international military alliances in security matters.
