(UPDATE 14:40) A court from Chisinau has issued a 30-day arrest warrant on Iurie Bolboceanu.
(14:05) Moldovan prosecutors announce, at a news conference, they and the secret service (SIS) probe a former civil servant for 'state treason' and spying.
It is for the first time that a Moldovan is investigated for such a felony.
He was recruited by a foreign spying agency long ago.
He is the former law-maker Iurie Bolboceanu.
He is charged with handing secret information to foreign intelligence services.
"It's a premiere when a spy is caught handing secret information. Thus we have stopped actions attempting on the national security," said SIS deputy chief Alexandru Balan.
Iurie Bolboceanu has been detained for 72 h.
Searches were conducted at his house, and a cellular phone has been found allegedly used to talk to an undercover agent.
They also found $23,000, money allegedly received as remuneration for the information conveyed.
According to the prosecutor Vitalie Busuioc, the meetings between Bolboceanu and the undercover agent took place once a month and they undertook special disguising measures.
The transfer of information was performed through a specialized laptop, as Bolboceanu was paid in US dollars.
If found guilty, he faces a prison sentence of between 12 and 20 years.
